FACILITIES PLANNING DEPARTMENT, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SECTION, CUSTOMER SERVICES GROUP, JOINT ADMINISTRATION OFFICE, WHITTIER
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To participate in the technical operation, maintenance, installation and troubleshooting of computer hardware and software, related peripheral equipment, and telecommunication systems.
Primary assignment will be for Helpdesk Support.
Under the general supervision of a Supervising Information Technology Technician and technical guidance of a Senior Information Technology Technician, the job will involve receiving inquiries and requests, via telephone, as well as email and other means of electronic communication, regarding software and hardware, computer access, and various information technology-related items; evaluating user situations to identify, document, and resolve computing or telephony problems and/or concerns; providing first-level hardware and/or software technical assistance via telephone and remote assistance application; responding to questions from users and providing remote user support; maintaining records of problems and activities in a help desk ticketing system; escalating and/or rerouting problems or requests for second-level support as needed; reviewing, diagnosing and resolving computer equipment issues; recommending equipment upgrades or replacement; coordinating the repair and/or replacement of computer equipment; assisting in the coordination of hardware and/or software purchasing; enrolling devices to a mobile device management system; identifying and making recommendations regarding areas of improvement; reviewing computer software and practices, and providing recommendations; generating reports for management and users; enforcing computing policies and procedures; instructing others in appropriate technology usage; assist in the preparation of training materials; conducting instructor led training for various business applications; documenting and maintaining procedures; performing related duties as required.
A valid California Class C driver license – AND – for the INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN I level applicants must possess two years of experience involved in operating, installing, monitoring, testing, and maintaining computer network systems in the area of either peripheral equipment, computer software or telecommunication systems. Completion of 12 semester units in computer or a related information technology discipline may substitute for one year of the required experience. For the INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN II level, applicants must possess one year of experience performing duties equivalent to an Information Technology Technician I; – OR – Two years of related experience plus completion of 12 semester units in computer or a related information technology discipline. Completion of additional coursework above 12 semester units in computer or a related information technology discipline may substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis. For the INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN III, one year of experience performing duties equivalent to an Information Technology Technician II.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of personal computer architecture, peripheral and interface equipment, software, Microsoft Windows and Apple iOS operating systems, Microsoft Office 365 Suite, Citrix Workspace, and OpenText eDocs are highly desired. Strong communication, troubleshooting, and customer service skills are essential.

The competitive selection process may cover for ALL CLASSES working knowledge of : A wide variety of computer, peripheral, and telecommunications systems; troubleshooting, maintenance and repair procedures for a wide variety of computer and telecommunication peripherals, interfaces, and software; electronic theory and principles; capabilities and operational procedures used in a help desk setting.
For Information Technology Technician I the ability to : Use, operate, detect and correct a wide range of problems with computer equipment and telecommunications systems with equipment, tools and software; minimize disruption and downtime when performing troubleshooting and repair tasks; read technical manuals; conduct training; monitor, install, operate and maintain equipment used in a help desk setting.
For Information Technology Technician II the ability to : Perform the duties of an Information Technology Technician I; use, operate, detect and correct more complex problems with computer equipment and telecommunications systems and interactions of multiple networks with technologically advanced equipment, tools and software; develop and conduct training on various computer hardware and software; communicate clearly with vendors and users; keep abreast of technology changes and adapt to new technologies; prioritize assignments; participate in planning for connecting multi-vendor equipment; prepare and present instructional sessions.
For Information Technology Technician III the ability to : Perform all phases, including the most complex tasks, with full proficiency.
