Our Medical Directors and seasoned technical staff have many years of experience in clinical testing and test development and are dedicated to providing the best quality service for physicians and their patients. Through our close partnership with the Knight BioLibrary and Histopathology Shared Resource Laboratories, research investigators can gain access to human biological specimens, histology, and immunohistochemistry services. The Molecular Technologist performs high complexity laboratory procedures to produce DNA results for interpretation and diagnosis of complex genetic and/or pathogenic disease. General knowledge of laboratory and molecular biology-specific terminology, equipment, materials, techniques and safety. Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately. Ability to work independently within established guidelines, to adjust to rapidly changing priorities, to communicate and work effectively within a group. Skill in handling laboratory specimens, record keeping, sterile technique and laboratory equipment. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of clients including doctors, nurses, laboratory staff and patients and maintain confidentiality and a customer focus at all times. Analysis of data generated from the following instruments: ABI 3130, ABI 3730, Illumina NextSeq 500/550, Illumina MiSeq, Luminex 200, Roche LC480, Abbott m2000rt, ABI 7500 Fast. – Submits laboratory data to the director and to the lab information system for use in preparation of patient reports. Maintains appropriate records and handles telephone calls as related to obtaining specimens and patient information. Performs additional assignments as deemed necessary by the director or supervisor. – Participates in the training of new laboratory personnel, students, residents, fellows, etc. Participates in research and development of new laboratory methods. – Extracts manually and using both automated DNA extractors and manual methods following laboratory procedures; store and handle samples in a manner to prevent degradation, contamination or mislabeling errors. Prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory with accuracy commensurate with the tolerances of the system to which they will be applied following the guise of the Lab procedure manual. Maintains reagent and consumable laboratory supply inventories, preparing orders for replacement chemicals and supplies in timely response to laboratory testing schedule and consumption. – Prepares Southern Blots which includes but is not limited to: quantitates DNA samples using the spectrophotometer, performs restriction enzyme digests, prepares agarose gels, performs gel electrophoresis, stains, photographs and blots agarose gels, pre-washes and pre-hybridizes blotted membranes, prepares probes, hybridizes blotted membranes with labeled probes, washes and prepares labeled membranes for autoradiography, performs autoradiography for highest band resolution results. Enters data into laboratory computer systems. – Bachelor’s degree in a biological science AND completion of a training program or one year of experience performing molecular techniques – OR – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience – Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time – Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal – Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems – Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) on Window OS.
