Job Description

Denver College of Nursing, 1401 19th Street, Denver, CO, in the heart of LoDo has a current opening for a Part-Time Online Faculty. Denver College of Nursing is affiliated with Education Affiliates, a company with approximately 50 post-secondary schools nationwide, with over 20 of these locations offering nursing programs. These schools are known as Fortis College, Fortis Institute, Denver College of Nursing and St. Paul’s School of Nursing. Our programs range from practical nursing to MSN degrees.

Job Description

Online Faculty

Online (Distance Education) Faculty members perform a number of roles and functions, each of which reflects the core competencies of Denver College of Nursing faculty. Those competencies include the following: 1) facilitate learning, 2) facilitate learner development and socialization, 3) use assessment and evaluation strategies, 4) participate in curriculum design and program evaluation, 5) function as a change agent and leader, 6) pursue continuous quality improvement in the educator role, 7) engage in scholarship, and 8) function within the educational environment and within the community Denver College of Nursing serves. This position reports to the Director of Online Programs.

Competencies and Responsibilities * Facilitate Learning

Online faculty members are responsible for creating an environment in the online classroom setting that facilitates student learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes. Online faculty members use a variety of supplementary resources (i.e., instructional technology, current articles and literature [compliant with copyright policy]), to facilitate learning. * Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization

Online faculty members recognize his/her responsibility for helping students develop as nurses and integrate the values and behaviors expected of those who fulfill that role. * Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies

Online faculty members use a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate student learning as well as in all domains of learning. * Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes

Online faculty members participate in curriculum design and evaluation of program outcomes that reflect contemporary healthcare trends and prepare graduates to function effectively in diverse healthcare environments. * Function as a Change Agent and Leader

Online faculty members function as change agents and leaders to create a preferred future for nursing education and nursing practice. Leadership may include mentoring or supervision of new full-time and/or adjunct faculty members. * Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Educator Role

Online faculty members recognize that his/her role is multidimensional and that an ongoing commitment to develop and maintain competence in the role and to life-long learning is essential. * Engage in Scholarship

Online faculty members acknowledge that scholarship is an integral component of the faculty role and that teaching itself is a scholarly activity. * Function within the Education and Community Environment

Online faculty members are knowledgeable about the educational environment within which he/she practices and recognizes how political, institutional, social, and economic forces impact his/her role.

These competencies and responsibilities are adopted from The Scope of Practice for Academic Nurse Educators (National League for Nursing, 2005).

Specific Responsibilities of Faculty

Online faculty has the primary responsibility of facilitating learning via distance education courses and providing guidance to the students. Additionally, faculty members are responsible for:

  • Adhering to all Denver College of Nursing policies and procedures.
  • Meet requirements for monitoring online student participation and attendance, perform student advising, respond to student/administration emails or calls in a timely manner, and actively participate in each course taught (see college Catalog and Faculty Handbook for details on each of these requirements).
  • Participating in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the philosophy and objectives of the program.
  • Participating in the construction, implementation, evaluation, and revision of the curriculum on a periodic basis.
  • Provide students with academic advising and coaching as appropriate.
  • Actively engage in retention activities, including documented communication with both students and administration regarding attendance and progress.
  • Being a positive role model for students and providing constructive feedback to students.
  • Detailed attention to: academic assessment of students’ learning, attendance records, grades, online course participation, and reporting of technical and/or student issues to administration.
  • Grade tests, projects, and other assignments in the required time frame. Submit final grades by the established deadline for each course taught.
  • A commitment to attendance, participation, and actively facilitating student achievement of learning outcomes in every class as assigned.
  • Adherence to course syllabus, standard syllabus template formats, content, class schedule, and textbook use.
  • Attendance and participation within faculty and staff meetings as required for online faculty. Incorporate learned concepts into instruction.
  • Participate in Program Advisory Committee (PAC) activities as requested.
  • Assessing student learning in terms of course and program objectives.
  • Participate in reviewing and revising the program policies and procedure on a periodic basis.
  • Participate in peer evaluation within the framework of the college.
  • Initiate periodic self-evaluation, clinical and/or appropriate industry competence, and professional development. Provide annual documentation of continuing professional growth.
  • Successful completion of online faculty orientation/training prior to the start of online instruction for Denver College of Nursing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

All Online Faculty

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in area of concentration from an accredited institution. Doctoral degree preferred. 18 hours of graduate credit in math or statistics or 18 hours of graduate credit in Sociology.
  • Prior post-secondary online teaching experience.
  • Expertise in interpersonal and oral presentation/written communication skills in an online environment.
  • Documented expertise in academic subject area as outlined in the appropriate section below.
  • Documented knowledge of education, instructional delivery, and adult learning required.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, administration, and vendors and agencies as a member of the team.
  • Ability to develop and complete projects without continued direct supervision.
  • Ability to physically work in the United States while performing all responsibilities of the position.
  • Willingness to work online daily with students (a minimum of five of seven days per online week).

Classification

Part-time online faculty positions are exempt and compensated based on credit hours and number of enrolled students in the class.. Work hours may vary depending upon class schedules. Evening and weekend hours may be required. Assignments are made on a quarterly basis and schedules may change on a quarterly basis or even within a quarter.

Technical Requirements

Online faculty must have the ability to access a personal computer, broadband Internet connection, and telephone connection (hardware, software, and Internet access specifications to be provided) to fulfill teaching and related administrative responsibilities. Online faculty members must be available for students and college communications in keeping with the policies and procedures outlined in the Online Faculty Handbook.

Physical Demands

To perform the essential competencies and responsibilities of the position, the faculty member is frequently required to: sit for long periods, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate computers and/or audiovisual equipment. The faculty member must be able to work and meet frequent deadlines in an environment that can be fast-paced and stressful at times.

Hourly rate of $30.00 per student credit hour and $25.00 per hour for all non-teaching activities. Online teaching assignments will be paid based on a teaching agreement.
